Import Permits
Indonesia is a rapidly developing market with an increasing demand for imported goods. However, navigating the import license regulations and obtaining the necessary import permits can be challenging, especially for newcomers. This guide will help you understand the import license requirements in Indonesia and you will have the right information to import and ship your goods to the country.
Import License Requirements in Indonesia
The first thing you need is a Business Identification Number (NIB). NIB functions as an API-U or API-P as your import license in Indonesia.
To get the correct NIB, you need to first register your business and choose the right business classification (KBLI).
Choosing the Correct KBLI
If you’re trading clothes, make sure your KBLI shows this. Only then will your NIB act as an API-U (General Import License), allowing you to import and trade these goods.
API-U (General Import License to trade): This license does not exempt you from import duties because the imported products are sold directly to consumers.
If you’re a cereal producer, your NIB will serve as an API-P (Producer Import License), letting you import goods and supplies for production.
API-P (Producer Import License): This license is exempt from import duties because imported goods are used as part of the production process.
Additional Import License in Indonesia
When importing products into Indonesia, you will also need extra product certifications and compliance documents to meet Indonesian regulations.
Product Certifications
Before importing or exporting goods, verify if they are on the LARTAS (prohibited and restricted imports).
You can do it through the Indonesian National Single Window (INSW) portal. You must accurately declare all goods on the customs declaration form (PIB) and attach the required LARTAS-related documents.
Import Approval/ Persetujuan Impor
Import Approval is important because it ensures your products meet health, safety, and environmental standards in Indonesia. To get Import Approval, start by checking if your product needs approval.
Then, prepare the necessary documents, including the commercial invoice, packing list, shipping details, and any relevant certificates, such as health certificates for animal products.
If everything is in order, you will receive the Import Approval document, which you must present during customs clearance.

Technical Verification/ Surveyor Report
To get this report, you need to first check if your product requires verification, then hire a certified surveyor to inspect your products. Prepare necessary documents, such as commercial invoices and product specifications, for the surveyor’s inspection.
Once the surveyor confirms that your products meet the required standards, you will receive the Technical Verification/ Surveyor Report. You must submit it during the customs clearance process.
